Basic Trust
is the soul’s way of attuning to a fundamental law of reality, the fact that our sense of existing as a separate and isolated entity is false, that our ego experience of isolation and helplessness is an illusion based on identification with the world of physical manifestation. Knowing that we are all part of one reality means that our true nature is not defined by ego experience in the physical body and cannot be fundamentally hurt or destroyed.

Speaking Flame
Desperation, let me always know
How to welcome you
And put in your hands the torch
To burn down the house.
Light the incense!
You have to burn to be fragrant.
To scent the whole house
You have to burn to the ground.
You only need smell the wine
For vision to flame from each void,
Such flames from wine’s aroma!
Imagine if you were the wine.
The thread of your Love is thin,
Far sharper than any knife,
Wind it around my mind
Pull it until I end.
There’s always another death to die
Beyond the death you know.
Always another door of scars
To open to another room.
In the dryest, whitest stretch
Of pain’s infinite desert,
I lost my sanity,
And found this rose.
From The Way Of Passion: A Celebration of Rumi, by Andrew Harvey (1994), chapter 2, “The Price of Adoration”.
