Believe it or not, the holiday season is almost here!  If your kids are anything like mine (ages 14, 13, and 10) they have already started to give me lists of the countless items they are hoping to receive as gifts.  Apparently, they see an endless number of choices.  However, if you are like me, too many choices can actually make life more difficult.  I want things simplified.  I want every situation to come with a clear-cut solution.

On a recent trip to our factory in Laval, Quebec, Canada, I was reminded of the thousands of SKU’s we have in our catalog, and how we offer the right part for virtually every application.  But how do you know what part to use when so many of them seem so similar?  In this month’s newsletter, we will provide some clarity that will help making the “right choice” a little more obvious and much more simple.

In the article below, you will find information about our grease duct products as illustrated through a case study of a restaurant that survived a grease duct fire.  Read our two columns if you are confused about the many, many product choices available. Not sure what insulation to select? The answer is here. When do you need zero clearance?  The answer is here. You will also find a section written by our own legendary Mike Heavener that answers the question “What is the difference between an adjustable and variable length?” This topic actually sparked a debate amongst our own team!

All of us at DuraVent are wishing all of you a holiday season that is both enjoyable AND simple!

Would Your Kitchen Survive a Grease Duct Fire?

It's still unclear how the fire started in this upscale restaurant in the historic neighborhood of Montreal. What is clear, however, is that the consequences could have been catastrophic. When Thierry Wright, of Distech Group, conducted a post-fire inspection of the grease duct, he remarked, “This is a story of survivability – not just of people but of a restaurant that faced very limited closure time after a fire that could have shut them down for good. We firmly believe that prefabricated, factory-built DuraStack® duct is an asset to restaurant owners for this very reason.” Upon further inspection, the exterior of the dual-wall duct looked pretty much the same as it did the day it was installed even though the interior wall revealed evidence of a fire that likely reached temperatures of 1000⁰F (540°C) or higher. In some jurisdictions, restaurants are required to re-permit after a grease duct fire which can be a long and costly process. In this case, the duct only needed to be cleaned and not replaced, avoiding replacement expenses, downtime and lost revenue. DuraVent's Prefab Grease Duct was able to contain the fire and prevent the loss of a great establishment and the surrounding buildings, allowing the restauranteur's dream to continue. Adjustable vs. Variable Lengths

The DuraStack® Pro Series, models DCL, DAS1, DIS1, DIS2, DIS4 and DIS3Z venting systems are designed to offer the ultimate in install convenience and versatility for a variety of applications. However, we are often asked what the different uses are for the adjustable and variable lengths. The different capabilities and uses can sometimes be confusing. An adjustable length really serves two purposes: The first being to fill odd gaps and the second to take up thermal expansion and will cover a gap between flanges of 7.25" to 28.375". A variable length will fill an odd gap from 7" to 28.5". For further product training and installation instructions on our Adjustable and Variable Lengths, check out our video series on the DuraVent YouTube channel!
